about
|
Listowel, one of Ireland's Heritage Towns,
is a lively market town in the heart of
north Co. Kerry, on the banks of the river
Feale. Described as the "Literary Capital
of Ireland", Listowel is the birthplace
of world famous Irish writers such as John
B. Keane and Bryan McMahon. |
 |
Listowel
is home to Writer's Week, the annual literary
festival held in June, the famous Listowel
Races, horse racing festivals held in April
and September, the Harvest Fair in September
and the annual Food Fair in November. In
the centre of the Square is St. John's Theatre
& Arts Centre, a former Church of Ireland,
which offers an impressive mix of theatre,
music, dance, exhibitions and educational
programmes throughout the year. |
The
Square is also home to the Kerry Literary
& Cultural Centre, where visitors can
experience the unique literary tradition
of the region through an interactive audio
visual exhibition. During the summer season,
the centre hosts a traditional North Kerry
show, presenting the music, song, dance
and folklore of the region.
Listowel offers a wide range of amenities
to residents and visitors alike. The carefully
restored 12th Century Castle will open in
2004, and the beautiful Garden of Europe
is a hidden gem in the Town Park. The Lartigue
Monorail, a replica of the unique railway
system which ran between Listowel and Ballybunion
in the late 19th century, is open to visitors
and offers short train rides. Other amenities
include golf, angling on the river Feale
and a variety of heritage trails. |
